{Note BDSM is used generically in this article to represent BDSM, Leather, and Fetish}
Are you involved in your local BDSM community? Do you know if one exists? And what can you expect from it?
BDSM for most people is a personal and private interest. It's practiced between consenting adults for their mutual pleasure in bedrooms around the world. A majority of these people are completely satisfied keeping their interests a private affair. And there is nothing wrong with that.
For others, BDSM is an opportunity to explore new horizons, meet new people, experience things they never imagined, and share with other like-minded adults. They join BDSM organizations, meet socially with others at munches and meetings, attend workshops to gain knowledge, and even give workshops to share their knowledge with others. And there is nothing wrong with that either.
If you are in the first group then this article may not be for you. If you are completely satisfied with what you and your partner are currently doing, all of yours and your partner's needs are being met, and you have no desire to explore beyond that, then you'll probably not find any value in continuing reading.
For those of you still with me let's look at some of the benefits of joining a community group.
Education: No one knows everything, no one has done everything, no one can define everything. Many groups offer an educational element in their group's activities. This can range from basic safety to technique to more advanced topics. The opportunity to learn from others will add so much to your own knowledge it's worth the nominal membership fee that most groups have. Often you'll see something that you never thought of, or never had the opportunity to experience, and you'll make it your own.
Camaraderie: Surround yourself with other like-minded people. The social aspects are a big part of joining any group, BDSM related or not. It's a chance to network with others, share experiences, and possibly meet that someone special (most organizations aren't dating services but your chances of meeting a like-minded partner are definitely better if you are around like-minded people)
Support: BDSM is still viewed by a large segment of society as abnormal behavior. It's nice to be able to talk with others that won't judge you for your interests.
The Internet has made finding a local organization easier. Use any of the major search engines and look for BDSM plus your city's name. A lot of the hits will be for porn sites but you should find something related. Try looking on sites like AlbertaKink (organizations can be found under the Links section) or in local alternative newspapers.
Involvement in your local community organizations can be a satisfying and rewarding experience. You'll make good friends and learn from some very knowledgeable people. And all that will be asked from you is a good nature and maybe a couple of bucks to support the group's activities.
